Moom Maam Artisanal Gelato

California's first Thai gelateria offers overwhelming and delicious desserts

It’s an important thing to see a Moom Maam dessert in person – or at least take note of its relative size in a photograph – before ordering one. Doing this will avoid the situation that we found ourselves in at Smorgasburg LA minutes after discovering this gelateria was in attendance: holding two lunch-sized desserts, and a third almost-regular-sized dessert, when we hadn’t yet eaten a proper meal.

We got into this situation because we spotted several flavors that we couldn’t ignore, including a really rich green uji matcha, a decidedly gray black sesame, and interesting piña colada and mango flavors. After a couple of taste tests, we went all-in on those flavors, skipping an espresso that was milkier than we would’ve liked, and passing on Thai tea that tasted just like Thai tea. We can have great Thai tea or coffee desserts at Wanderlust Creamery, but these other flavors, Moom Maam does better. A lot better.

It also dusts every portion with toasted coconut, then places a mohawk-like slice of waffle cone on top. These little touches guarantee that you’ll have some added flavor and textural complexity, no matter what else is in the bowl.

The oversized sundaes combine wavy, crispy thin waffle cone bowls with sweet sticky rice and two portions of gelato that we can’t call scoops on account of their sizes – think maybe three scoops per portion. This would normally be a problem for health reasons, except that Moom Maam’s flavors are wonderful in a way that actively discourages such thoughts; instead of worrying about calories, you may well attempt to think about how healthy all the green tea powder or mango used in the ice cream must be. Yeah, it’s that sort of experience. You can cut the damage in half by going with their regular-sized portion.

Moom Maam says it’s the first Thai gelateria in California, and just opened a shop in Torrance, west of Long Beach and south of LA. If you’re reading from Orange County, we’d recommend visiting them on a Sunday at Smorgasburg. And try your best to have a proper meal first.
