Quan Nhii

In Westminster, a unique presentation of Banh Uot wraps: 10-plate towers of rice rolls

When Quan Nhii opened in Westminster, we were among its earliest paying customers: this new, much younger sibling to Little Saigon’s well-established Quan Mii introduced Orange County to a locally new dining concept: 10 plates of Banh Uot (“ban ugh-k”).

Banh Uot use the same thin tapioca rice rolls from Banh Cuon, but arrive disassembled so you can insert the meats, vegetables, and herbs of your choice, roll them up, and dip them in fish sauce. While Banh Uot are available at numerous places in Orange County, Quan Nhii’s concept is to give you 10 plates, each with one disc topped with chives and either minced shrimp or mung beans, then let you add a la carte meats (pork, meatloaf, chicken, or fried tofu), veggie fillings, and additional individual plates if you want them. An alternative, Banh Hoi, swaps vermicelli rice bundles for the plates. The a la carte meat dishes are small, so you’ll need at least a couple to fill the rolls.

On our first visit, when the prices were pretty reasonable, we thought this was a distinctive presentation and fun way to enjoy banh uot. Unfortunately, Quan Nhii raised their prices dramatically after the soft opening, and pushed $50 “combo for two” meals with barely enough food to be a meal for either person. As the steep charge was for the tower-like presentation – standard banh uot can be had elsewhere for half the price – this decision alone transformed something that was easy to recommend as a novelty into a real tough sell.

We hope Quan Nhii can figure out how to make this concept work, because we really like it. At the right price, and with more options than the current collection, we’d visit frequently.
