Honduras Kitchen

In Long Beach, Honduran baleadas are taco cousins, stuffed with beans, cream, and cheese

On our hunt for Honduran food in Orange County, we came across a promising option in nearby LA County: Honduras Kitchen. Originally opened as “El Dorados Kitchen” in Huntington Park back in 1992, the restaurant subsequently rebranded and opened its second location in Long Beach, which we visited. Both locations apparently have the same concept, restaurant plus dance floor, though the latter wasn’t occupied when we arrived for lunch.

The big draw here are Honduran baleadas, an interesting step between tacos and burritos: Baleadas start with house-made flour tortillas that are then filled with beans, avocado, cheese, cream, and optionally a meat of your choice. The basic baleada is $5.50 and comes with beans, Honduran cream, and cheese, but you can customize it with meat, a vegetable, egg, or rice, each addition adding $1 to $1.75 to the price. For under $5, Honduras Kitchen also offers a baleada dessert with apples, Honduran honey, and Nutella inside – it was quite nice, though pretty much the sum of its parts.

Although Honduras Kitchen emphasizes those baleadas, its menu contains numerous other Honduran specialties, including a fine (though quite expensive) coconut conch soup, chicken with rice, and multiple dishes featuring pigs’ feet or shrimp. Meals kick off with cheese-dusted chips doused in a mild red sauce, a cool (and included) alternative to Mexican-style chips and salsa.

We were generally pleased with our first experience at Honduras Kitchen, and are considering whether to make a return visit to explore more of the menu.
