Sarkis Pastry

An Armenian bakery that offers equally compelling Middle Eastern and Western desserts

Opened in 1983 as the first Middle Eastern bakery in Glendale, Sarkis Pastry came to Orange County 12 years later with a new store in Anaheim, and expanded to Pasadena in 1999. With more space for display cases (and baked goods) than tables, this Armenian sweets shop would be worth visiting solely for the multicolored Zulubia, piped rings of sweet batter in rose syrup. But it’s also packed with other Middle Eastern treats, including glorious walnut Ayatef turnovers, pretzel-shaped semolina Moushabeks, sweet cheese-filled Znood el Sets, and cashew baklavas.

It’s often the case that Middle Eastern bakeries offer Western-style sweets as a second-tier afterthought, but at Sarkis, the oversized, chocolate sprinkle-covered rum balls are surprising standouts, and the other European-style pastries are good, too. Everything is reasonably priced, so we expect to return for multiple visits to sample more of their menu.
