He’s Noodle Zone

A Sichuan restaurant with tasty noodles wasn't hot enough to stay open in Irvine

In 2022, a small restaurant named He’s Noodle Zone opened in Irvine’s Heritage Plaza, close to Baekjeong Korean Barbecue, Nep Cafe, and the Japanese supermarket Mitsuwa, offering Sichuan food at entirely reasonable prices. The service model was minimalistic, almost to a fault: Staff pointed guests to order dishes from a comprehensive digital menu accessible from smartphones, and had little interaction beyond bringing dishes from the kitchen to tables. It didn’t feel like traditional “hospitality,” but the service was quite fast during our meal, and all of the food was very good.

Our favorite dishes were the sesame and chili dan dan noodles, fried pork jowl skewers, and shredded lemon chicken, each wonderfully flavored even though nothing we ordered – including Sichuan hot & spicy dumplings – was as hot or spicy as we would have expected. We also enjoyed beef and tomato seasonal vegetables, roasted pepper dumplings, spicy deep-fried yellow croaker, and braised beef dishes, a relatively large meal that was affordable.

He’s unexpectedly closed in 2024, and became Kirin Noodle House.
