Top of the V

Experience semi-authentic Spanish tapas with great service and a 12th floor view of Anaheim

When Marriott took over the Radisson Blu Anaheim hotel, renaming it The Viv, its rooftop Blusky Restaurant became “Top of the V.” The basic premise of the restaurant – authentic Spanish tapas at premium prices – remained the same, so our continued passion for Spanish cuisine brought us in for a visit. On paper, it checks all the boxes: a menu with nearly all the tapas, entrees, and paella one might hope to see from Spain, strong service, a swank dining room, and the option to sit outside with drinks while watching Anaheim from 12 floors up. Compared with rooftop Spanish-style experiences in LA, the view isn’t actually all that compelling, but it’s different, and that counts for something.

While the service was great – friendly and attentive – the food was generally good, mirroring the looks of classic tapas without always nailing flavors or textures. Strongest were the Carrillera, a sous vide-soft beef cheek set in a slightly sweet piquillo pepper purée; sliced and skewered Txistorra mini sausages; and a deliciously garlic-hinted but lightly oiled Gambas al Ajillo. Each was presented beautifully, and would pass flavor and texture tests in either San Sebastián or the best U.S. tapas outposts.

Other items were okay to good: Visually idealized Patatas Bravas with nice sauces but slightly off potato flavor; oversized and under-hammed Croquetas de Jamón; and Pulpo a la Plancha with properly tenderized, Galician-seasoned octopus resting in a lot of unremarkable potato foam. While you could find these tapas in the Basque Country, they would be at least a little and perhaps a lot better wherever you ordered them.

Pork belly with quince paste and garlic was beautiful but dry; the Txuleton Deshuesado, purportedly an imported Galician ribeye from an old-aged Spanish cow, was impressively Josper-cooked but didn’t have the expected soft texture or deep flavor of typical aged beef. Pan Cristal and pig ears were each disappointing, but thankfully, a great Basque cheesecake and solid Goxua (brûléed cream cake) stuck the landing.

Our meal at Top of the V was expensive, but we’d visit again. The overall experience is date night-worthy, particularly if you’re not a stickler for Spanish authenticity and can focus more on the fun than the flavors or the pricing.
