Quan Vy Da

In Westminster, another good (and affordable) option for central Vietnamese delicacies

Riding on the fine edge of “good” and “okay,” Quan Vy Da has been operating in Little Saigon since 1996, representing central Vietnamese (Hue) cuisine in all of its glory. Tastefully decorated with plenty of seating space and a handful of plants, including orchids, Quan Vy Da occupies the corner spot in a Westminster plaza with La Ka Viet (formerly Hui Lau Shan) and Banh Cuon Tay Ho as fellow tenants, and is only a block away from similarly named and central Vietnamese-themed Quan Hy.

At Quan Vy Da, banh beo rice cakes delivered in tiny individual dishes are beautifully presented and affordable, as are combination soft and crispy rice banh it rams, served four to an order. You can order the Vy Da combo to sample a wide range of these snacks at once, including banh bot loc la chuoi, banana leaf-wrapped shrimp and pork dumplings in tapioca.  Many (but not all) of the central Vietnamese items initially present better than Quan Hy’s versions, and as the saying goes, we eat with our eyes first.

Looks only count for a part of the equation, though. From item to item, we preferred Quan Hy’s flavors over Quan Vy Da’s, and some of Vy Da’s items showed up a little sloppy and underwhelming. That said, the prices here aren’t extortionate: no dish on the menu costs $15 or more, and many are $13 or less. You can get authentically executed Mi Quang noodle soup, and a jackfruit salad for around $14 each, and finish with a dessert like a multi-layer jello for under $4.

While Quan Vy Da wouldn’t be our first pick for central Vietnamese, it’s a good choice – a clean, nicely decorated space with a solid menu and pretty good food. That said, we’d recommend trying it after Quan Hy.
